The last leg: one short hop on a twin prop plane from Brussels to Bristol Airport, one hour flying time. Two and a half hours later we are still circling the fog-bound airport when the captain comes on to say that we are diverting to Birmingham.
So, as we calculated to pass the time while circling, a trip which has included 9 flights, 4 ferry trips, 36 hours on trains, countless taxi and tuk tuk rides ends with a coach trip down the M5.

But spring has arrived early in Devon. The garden is full of bees and blooming flowers – hyacinths, daffodils, hellebores, camellias, primroses, anemones, bergenias, chinodoxa. There’s blossom on the cherry and tadpoles in the pond and the birds are nesting in the hedges. The sun is shining. We’re off to the beach ……
