Two and a half hours on the ferry from Havelock Island back to Port Blair where we have a two night stopover before catching the flight to Delhi via Calcutta. A little exploration the last time we were here turned up the De Marina Hotel, newly opened and so undiscovered by the guide books and TripAdvisor and so we were able to negotiate a good rate for the best room we have had so far on our trip for a room with all you could ask for and a fantastic view to the sea and over the city.
Yesterday we took a short boat trip to Ross Island, the seat of British colonial government for the Andamans from the 1840s until the Japanese invaded in 1942. It’s a tiny island but was once described as the Paris of the East with a grand Governor’s House, a ballroom with a sprung teak floor, tropical gardens, a large garrison of troops, two churches etc but an earthquake in 1941 and abandonment after the Japanese left means that the jungle is reclaiming the ruins. It’s an eerie sort of place now.
